Registration open for CAT Nov. 2018: Important aspects of CAT 2018 you need to know

CAT Nov. 2018 (Common Admission Test) is a national level management entrance exam for the academic session 2019-20. The Indian Institutes of Management will conduct computer-based Common Admission Test 2018 (CAT 2018) on Sunday, 25th November 2018 in two sessions.

Every year, one of the IIMs organize CAT for admission to MBA and PGDM programs by leading business schools in India. This year, IIM Calcutta will conduct the examinations on Sunday, November 25 in 147 cities across the country in two sessions.

Important aspects you need to know


CAT Nov. 2018, the registration window opened on 8th August 2018 and will close at 5:00 p.m. on 19th September 2018. At the time of registration, the candidates have to select any four Test Cities as per their preference from the drop-down menu. CAT 2018 Registration Fee for General candidates is INR 1900 and INR 1000 for reserved category candidates.

Registration fee could be paid through online payment modes only, which will include credit cards, debit cards, and net banking. There is no additional application fee to apply for the 50 management programs offered by the leading 20 IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) in the country. The candidates can download the admit cards from 24th October 2018 till 25th November 2018 through the official website, iimcat.ac.in.


CAT Nov. 2018 will be conducted in centers spread across around 147 test cities. Candidates will get preference to select four cities where the exam center located in order of preference. Cities and centers will be assigned to the candidates only after the last date for CAT 2018 registration and hence candidates need not rush to block slots and cities in the initial days of registration.

Concerned authority will try their best to assign candidates to their first preferred city. In case it is not possible, they will be assigned a city following their given order of preference. In the rare case that a candidate is not allotted any of the preferred cities, he/she will be allotted an alternate city. However, candidates will not be able to select the session because it will be assigned randomly


The paper for CAT comprises 3 sections –

• VARC – Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
• DILR – Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
• Quant – Quantitative Ability

A total of 100 questions are to be attempted in 180 minutes, 60 minutes for answering questions in each section. Nearly 70% questions in CAT are likely to carry negative marking of 1/3 marks.

Please note that each IIM is independent to mandate their own eligibility criteria (including academic cut-offs and relative weights) and follow different selection processes. Performance in CAT 2018 examination is an important component for consideration in the selection process. IIMs may also use previous academic performance of the candidates, relevant work experience, and other similar inputs in short-listing of candidates at various stages of the selection process. The CAT 2018 Scores are allowed to be used by the listed non-IIM member institutions. List of non-IIM member institutions that have registered to avail the CAT 2018 scores is provided at the official website. Please note that IIMs have no role in the selection process of non-IIM institutions.
