Pranab Mukherjee will teach “Public Policy” at IIM – Ahmedabad. Pranab Mukherjee is an Indian politician and has served as the 13th President of India, from 2012-2017. A veteran in Indian politics, he has the rare distinction of having served as Foreign, Defence, Commerce and Finance Minister at different times over his long and illustrious political career spanning several decades.
Former President Pranab Mukherjee is all set to give his teaching lessons and valuable insights to the management students of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. A veteran Parliamentarian, He is known for his sharp memory and is a storehouse of knowledge on the government affairs, public policy, Constitutional matters, politics and Parliamentary and financial affairs.
As per sources, the President had been a teacher of Political Science in Presidency College of Kolkata. Teaching is his favorite role for many years. During his years in Rashtrapati Bhavan, he inaugurated ‘Be A Teacher’ programme of Delhi Government on the eve of Teachers’ Day at Rashtrapati Bhavan in 2015.
The President took a class for students of XI and XII on the subject of the political history of India in Dr. Rajendra Prasad Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in the President’s Estate. He said, “I am not your President today, call me Mukherjee sir.” Pranab Mukherjee will teach “Public Policy” at IIM – Ahmedabad.
In his hour-long class, Mukherjee had spoken to the students about his childhood, the writing of the Constitution and the first general election. “Till today, I have the urge of teaching somewhere. A teacher gives himself to the students and the job of a student is to draw from him as much as possible. I am explaining history as I have seen it,” Mukherjee had been quoted in news reports as having said.
Recalling his stint in the school, the former President had told students: “I was a naughty child. I was just an average student. I had to walk 5km for my school and I used to complain to my mother about the distance. She used to tell me that she had no other option and always advised me to work hard.”
In 2016, he delivered a special lecture to students of classes XI and XII of Delhi’s Dr. Rajendra Prasad Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in 2016 He gave a lesson to students on the history of Indian politics. Now, Pranab Mukherjee will teach “Public Policy” at IIM – Ahmedabad.
As per his opinion, “there has been a sea change in the education system. He described the evolution of our multi-party democracy and said that he had seen many events unfolding before his eyes and marveled at Indian democracy. Democracy gives the opportunity to common people to fulfill their aspirations. It was because of democracy that he could reach the Raisina Hill. What students learn in the formative stage of their lives has a permanent impact on their minds. Perhaps his best teacher was his mother who instilled in him the importance of our ancient civilizational values.”
As per sources, he will be called to take six classes at Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad beginning September and continue with his favorite teaching assignment in October and November as well. He will take classes on “Public Policy” at IIM Ahmedabad, an assignment which he gladly accepted as teaching remains one of his favorite passions besides reading and writing.

Mukherjee said with his characteristic smile,”I am 83 now and with the age, I have slowed down in many things.”
After the demitting office of the President of India a year ago, his daily routine keeps him busy with a lot of reading, meeting people from a variety of backgrounds, and writing. He is working on his next book, which should be ready in the next four to five months.
