The elections for Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) held on September 12, 2018. Nearly 1.35 lakh students voted to decide the fate of 23 candidates in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.
The results of the Delhi University Students’ Union elections are out. It may be a pleasant development for the Bharatiya Janata Party and its supporters. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has won three out of four posts of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU).
ABVP candidates Ankiv Baisoya, Shakti Singh and Jyoti Choudhary bagging the posts of president, vice-president and joint secretary respectively. The post of secretary went to NSUI candidate Akash Choudhary. ABVP leader Ankiv Baisoya won with 20,457 votes, Shakti Singh (ABVP) with 23,046 votes, while Jyoti Chaudhary (ABVP) with 19,353 votes. NSUI managed to win one seat, as student leader Akash Choudhary won with 20,198 votes.
The counting day was mired in controversies as some contesting outfits complained about EVM tampering after six rounds of counting. The counting, which began at 8 AM, was suspended briefly after members of NSUI and CYSS complained about EVM malfunctioning in some stations.
The NSUI demanded fresh elections on the ballot paper or VVPAT, while ABVP pressed to resume the counting, terming NSUI’s allegations as unfounded. The counting resumed after the contesting parties mutually agreed to take the process forward.
The DUSU and Lok Sabha elections have a coincidental link. On the past five occasions, the party which won the DU Students’ Union election went on to win the Lok Sabha election the next year. This happened in the Lok Sabha elections that took place a year after the DUSU elections held in 1997, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013. This year’s DUSU election results are similar to those witnessed in 2013.
Over a lakh, students voted in the election this year, which saw a turnout of 44.46 percent. There were 23 candidates in the fray.
The elections were conducted under tight security. Around 11 members of different parties, who were seen canvassing, were warned by the patrolling police personnel. Security was also put in place outside Zakir Hussain (Evening) College, which had witnessed violence on Monday after the members of the ABVP allegedly damaged college property and also assaulted some faculty members and students.
