Indian Institute of Technology Patna is one of the new IITs established by an Act of the Indian Parliament on August 06, 2008. Recently, IIT Patna held its 6th Convocation on 13 Sept. 2018. The convocation was held at Gyan Bhavan of Samrat Ashoka Convention Hall in Patna. 2018 is a special year since it marks a decade of IIT Patna’s existence. And this convocation is special because the first batch of M.Sc. students received their degree.
The chief guest of the convocation was Padma Shri Manas Bihari Verma- the brain behind TEJAS – India’s light combat aircraft, while the guest of honor was Manindra Agarwal, professor of computer science and deputy director, IIT-Kanpur. The institute chairman and famous for developing the Algorithm – the AKS Primality Test, Board of Governors, Ajai Chowdhry and IIT-Patna director Pushpak Bhattacharyya were also present on the occasion.
In this convocation, 172 B.Tech. students, 22 M.Sc. students, 67 M.Tech. students and 15 Ph.D. students were awarded their degrees.
While the President of India Gold Medal for academically best student went to Jatin Kalra, B. Tech. from Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Institute Silver Medal for securing highest CPI in each course went to Naman Agrawal, Durgesh Kumar, Jatin Kalra, S. Pranav, and Akshay Sukumar Ajagekar.
The Kedar Nath Das Memorial Award was given to Naman Agrawal of Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering. It is an award of Rs. 10,000.
The Aryabhatta Gold Medal in M.Sc. was awarded to Rohit Kumar of Dept. of Physics. The Institute Silver medals in M.Sc. were awarded to Rohit Kumar, Suman Kumari and Argha Saha of Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry respectively.
The Chairman’s Gold Medal awarded to academically best student for M.Tech students was awarded to Kumar Nishant Ujjwal from Department of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering and the Institute Silver Medal for securing highest CPI in each course was awarded to Kumar Nishant Ujjwal, Ankur Pandey, S. Ryan Thomas, Mansi Maheshwari, Saurabh Srivastava, Anurag Shukla, Kanika Choudhary and Prakhar Verma.
Apart from these medals, B.Tech. and M.Tech. Students were awarded “proficiency in project work prize” of Rs. 5000/- and Rs. 7500/- respectively for the best project works in their departments.
Kumar Nishant Ujjawal, a Nawada youth working as assistant professor at JECRC University, Jaipur, said, “I want to pursue research in the field from IISC Bangalore. Whatever I am today is due to IIT-Patna as the faculty members are the best and always ready to help students by clearing doubts and giving suggestions.”
Ujjawal, after completing his BTech from KIIT-Bhubaneswar, joined IIT-Patna for pursuing MTech.
The chief guest, Padma Shri Manas Bihari Verma exhorted the students to be enthusiastic about the future and make an effort to face challenges thrown to them by the outside world. He laid stress on encouraging the culture of innovation and industry-academia collaborative research.
The Chairman of the Board of Governors, Padma Bhushan Shri Ajai Chowdhry congratulated the students on their success. The Director of the Institute, Shri Pushpak Bhattacharyya dwelt at length over the growth of the Institute during the last year. New constructions are coming up like boys’ and girls’ hostels; focus is being given to entrepreneurial activities with a lot of support from the Government of Bihar; faculty has been getting accolades at various academic forums and the students to have shown their mettle in various competitions at the national level. There have been various collaborations with international institutes like IST, Lisbon, Portugal and Wright State University, Ohio, USA.
As per the NIRF rankings, IIT Patna is placed at the 24th position among engineering institutions in the country and has been ranked 108th in QS BRICS University Rankings 2018. The QS BRICS University Rankings 2018 feature 300 top universities from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Placement process has set a new benchmark by attracting more than 80 numbers of recruiters this year.
This year, IITP has placed 88 % of its B.Tech. (2014-18) and 60% of the M.Tech. (2016-18) students with 180 offers. Highest offers came from Google as PPO (Pre Placement Offer) and Adobe, followed by D.E. Shaw and Amazon.
IIT Patna has set up the Continuing Education Programme (CEP) cell. CEP of IIT Patna is dedicated to assisting working professionals in widening their knowledge base and improving their skills. CEP also focuses on improving the teaching, research and management skills of faculty in various technical institutions across the country. CEP of IIT Patna is also offering CEP courses and mentorship to the two institutions of Bihar under TEQIP-III Programme – Lok Nayak Jay Prakash Institute of Technology, Chapra and Darbhanga College of Engineering, Darbhanga.
On the whole, it was a time of festivities and happy faces and emotional moments with group photos, selfies, and celebrations adding to the mood. Family members exchanged notes of the success of their wards and immensely enjoyed the graduation ceremony.
